The technological evolution continues
in the field of Implant Dentistry. Our early implants (in the
1970’s) we reserved for those patients having no apparent other
options or for whom the complete denture had failed due to a lack of
bone support. Although this “anchoring approach” remains, today we
present implants as a first option in many cases to facilitate the
replacement of missing teeth. Many times it is not wise to depend
solely on teeth adjacent to a space for support of tooth
replacements. In those cases, individual “anchors” are placed into
the bone and allowed to “integrate” over a 3 – 6 month time period.
Subsequently individual teeth are cemented onto the implant root and
function in much the same way as natural teeth. In cases when one
has been unfortunate enough to lose all of their teeth and has
difficulty wearing a denture, new implant attachments are now
simpler and more economic than ever. |
