From the smallest to the largest filling, this is a field which has made tremendous progress in recent years. Our goal is to remove the least amount of natural tooth tissue necessary to maintain long-term strength and natural appearance. Therefore, for small fillings we no longer use “silver”, but we preserve and strengthen the tooth with direct (tooth colored) composite fillings. These bond to the teeth and eliminate the wedging effect seen with most silver fillings as time passes. Instead of full crowns (requiring liberal reduction of natural tissue) we have since 1989 (in most cases) used conservative inlays and onlays made from porcelain or laboratory processed composites to restore those teeth needing extensive support. Most exciting of all, with Cerec 3D Technology, this can be performed in a single visit – no temporaries and no return visit to get the permanent restoration. This is accomplished with computer imaging and CAD/CAM technologic “miracles”.
